Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone has launched a major consultation on the future of housing in London, arguing that London needs a new housing strategy that is fit for the 21st century.

It follows the Government’s announcement in July to devolve more housing powers to the Mayor, making him responsible for producing London’s Housing Strategy and deciding the broad distribution of investment in affordable homes.

The Mayor launched Towards the Mayor’s Housing Strategy, the consultation document that marks the first step in developing his new statutory Housing Strategy. It outlines the Mayor’s aims to drive up the quality and quantity of new homes, particularly affordable homes, in London.

Delivering more homes that better meet the needs of London’s diverse population, such as a greater supply of new family sized homes, and as ensuring that London’s housing strategy is fully integrated with the Mayor’s other key social, economic, planning, transport and environment strategies, are also key aims for the Mayor.

He said: “The Government’s decision to make my office responsible for housing strategy creates a real opportunity to give it higher priority and greater focus. We must build the right types of new homes to the right standards in the right places. We must deliver more affordable homes to support London’s diverse and growing population.

“But sustainability must be at the heart of what we do, which means reducing energy use and cutting the cost of energy bills. All our new homes and new neighbourhoods must be of high quality design, built to last, and incorporating the latest technologies that mitigate the effects of climate change. That is why I am also launching, on behalf of the Climate Change Partnerships in the South East, a practical guide showing how planners and developers can design climate change adaptations into new developments.”
